SPADES REFRESHER
RULES
Objective of the Game!
Spades is a partnership card game played with 4 players in two teams. The goal is to be the first team to reach 500 points by winning "tricks" (rounds of play where each player plays one card) based on your bid.Basic Setup
A standard deck of 52 cards is used (no jokers).
Cards are ranked from Ace (high) to 2 (low), and Spades is always the trump suit. This means that any Spade card can beat cards from other suits.
The Deal
The dealer shuffles and deals all the cards, so each player gets 13 cards.
Bidding
After the cards are dealt, each player must bid the number of tricks (or rounds) they think they can win in that hand.
You bid based on the strength of your hand. If you think you won’t win any tricks, you can bid “Nil” (which can score bonus points if successful, but penalties if not).
Your bid is combined with your partner’s to create your team’s bid for that round.
There are no penalties for overbidding (winning more tricks than your bid), but you only score based on the tricks you actually bid. Winning more than you bid gives you “bags” (which can be a penalty if you collect too many).
Playing the Game
The player to the dealer’s left leads the first trick by playing any card except a Spade (Spades can't be played until they've been "broken," which means someone plays a Spade because they don’t have a card in the suit that was led).
Each player, in clockwise order, must follow suit (play the same suit that was led) if possible. If you don’t have a card of that suit, you can play a Spade or any other card.
The trick is won by the highest card of the suit that was led unless a Spade is played. In that case, the highest Spade wins.
The player who wins the trick leads the next one.
Scoring
Your team scores 10 points for each trick you bid and won. For example, if you bid 6 tricks and won 6, you earn 60 points.
Overtricks (bags) earn 1 point each, but if your team gets 10 bags over the course of the game, you lose 100 points.
If you don’t meet your bid, your team loses 10 points for each trick you bid but didn’t win. For example, if you bid 5 tricks but only won 3, you lose 50 points.
If you successfully bid “Nil” (winning no tricks), your team earns a 100-point bonus. If you fail, your team loses 100 points.
Winning the Game
The game continues with players bidding and playing hands until one team reaches 500 points. That team is declared the winner.
Common House Rules
Spades Can’t Lead Until Broken: Spades can’t be led until someone plays a Spade because they don’t have a card in the suit that was led.
Blind Nil: A player can bid “Blind Nil” before looking at their cards. If they win no tricks, their team gets a 200-point bonus, but if they fail, they lose 200 points.
Bags Penalty: Accumulating 10 bags results in a 100-point penalty, encouraging players to be precise with their bids.
Tips for Beginners
Pay attention to your partner's bid and work together to win the right number of tricks.
Try to remember what cards have been played, especially Spades.
Don’t always save your Spades for the end—you may need to break Spades early to win tricks.
Spades is a game of strategy, teamwork, and fun! You’ll quickly catch on as you play more hands. Enjoy the game and the community that comes with it!
